Dear Families,

We are happy to share that we had another great week in 1S!

During Bird Study we continued our exploration of nests. After learning about different types of nests we became nest builders ourselves!  We read 'Mama Built a Little Nest'. Afterwards, just like real birds we gathered the materials to build our own nests.

We also watched a documentary about how different birds building nests!
Click here, if you would like to watch it again with your child. (It is a documentary about 50 minutes long.)

In math, we continued to work with Cuisenaire Rods to explore the complements up to ten. We have also been solving rod riddles to better understand complements. Here is an example of what all the complements of 10 would look like with cuisenaire rods:
10+0=10
1+9=10
2+8=10
....
9+1=10
0+10=10
We also read books during our read aloud time that allowed us to think about families and... of course... Birds!

Mystery Guest:
Julie, Hugo's mom, surprised us on Tuesday by bringing Matryoshka dolls for us to paint and sharing Russian folktales with the class. We had a blast painting our own Matryoshka dolls! Thank you, Julie!

Today, Dylan's parents, Natasha and Dean surprised us with a Thanksgiving Story and craft. We loved their family tradition of Dylan's family of doing a 1000 piece puzzle ever year during Thanksgiving!

Our trip to the Audubon Greenwich was an other fantastic trip. We got to see and several birds of prey flying! We learned how scientists keep track of migrating birds to take care of them as they do bird counts!

Rainy days always bring a different kind of joy to us as we get to enjoy indoor choice time! Here are a few pictures from today.

Our block structures are becoming more and more elaborate and amazing every week!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Best,
MY and Amanda
