December 16th - December 20th

Hello 1S Families,

We had a wonderful and productive week together in 1S before we headed off for the winter break!

In math we returned to our exploration of coins, focusing on the value of a quarter. We will keep practicing after break when we open our first "store" of the year!

We had two fabulous Mystery Guest this week! Belinda, Noa N.'s mom, came to talk to us about Hanukkah. She read us two great books, then we got to decorate frames and play the Dreidel game. We had a blast! Thank you, Belinda!

Lisa's mom, Marina came to teach us about artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning! We loved hearing about the ways we already are using AI and the ways we may help to shape it in the future. We played a game that allowed us to experience this firsthand!

We had a fun meet-up with our buddy class, 3H!  We played games and did crafts as we get to know each other better! We love spending time with our new third grade friends!

At the end of the week, we celebrated our 60th class point by watching the movie, Sing! We look forward to finishing it in 2020!

We finished our last day of school in 2019 with a beautiful, song-filled, assembly. Enjoy a the videos of our performance! ( You may need to cut and paste in your browser.)

Joan, our fabulous FL Librarian, sent home a login for the library so you can access audio and interactive books over the break. Look for the bright orange paper in your child's backpack for their unique login information.

Have a wonderful break! We look forward to seeing you and your children in 2020!!!

Thank you for all of the generous gifts that we collected from Joe's office this afternoon. We can't wait to enjoy them with our families.

Love,
Min Young and Amanda

Happy Friday 1S Families,

It was a short week for the kids but, as always, we were busy making, learning, singing and playing!

Bird work had us exploring beaks! We were real scientist experimenting with different tools to model bird beaks. We gathered data, discussed our findings and made connections to real birds!

The children have been very interested in sharing and learning about winter holidays that different families celebrate. This is a nice opportunity to connect to our community and family study. They really enjoyed hearing Christmas Daddy and Hanukkah Momma by Selina Alko, a story about a family celebrates Christmas and Hanukkah in special ways. We also read another book called, Celebrations of Light to learn about winter celebrations around the globe.

We had a blast with our mystery guest this week! Jasper's mom, Abigail, came with her guitar and we got to sing and dance to some of our favorite songs. 1S is a big fan of the Beatles! Thank you Abigail!

During our Community Time, we read the Homes and Nest book written by 1S. We loved hearing about what, makes a home a home for our classmates. After the reading, we worked together to create a cover that represented each of us!

In Math, Rosemarie gave us a problem solving challenge. She tripped and and dumped several decks of cards on the floor! Then we had to come up with a strategy to figure out how many cards are in one deck. This was challenging but we came up with some great strategies.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Best,
MY and Amanda

December 2nd-December 6th

Happy Friday!

Please remember there is NO SCHOOL next Friday, 12/13 as we have Parent Teacher Conferences.

We had a week filled with snow, ice and puddles! Please check your child's bag for their boots, snow pants, hats and gloves. We will be sending them home on the weekends unless you would like your child to keep them all at school.

In Math, we have continued to work with Cuisinaire rods. We started the week with Rod Riddles and have been challenged with Rod Puzzles. We read the book, 'The Most Magnificant Thing', by Ashley Spires. We shared how some things can be challenging and shared strategies we can use then these moments occur, such as taking deep breathes, starting over, and taking breaks!

In Ethics, we worked with our partners to complete our 4- 8 beat rhythms and shared them with our classmates. We will share more of them next week.

As for Birds.... we worked hard to make our own nest books to share different types of nests and birds that build/live in these nests. We will be moving into learning about beaks and feet next week!

We have started reading 'Charlotte's Web' as a class read aloud. We look forward to reading and talking more about the beautiful friendship between Charlotte and Wilber. :)

We had our second meet up with our Buddy Class, 3H, this week! All buddy classes have a been assigned an area of the school to be the caretakers of. Our classes were give the lost and found and Cafe. We worked together with 3H to identify some of the things we've noticed and began to brainstorm solutions. Next time we meet we will put our ideas into action!!

Our special Mystery Guest this week was Sophia's father, Neil! He came to share his passion for math and lead us in fun addition game using dice. We shared our math stories with him and had lots of fun. At the end, we each got a set of dice to take home. To play the game 'Racing Dice' with the new dice,  please click here. Thanks so much, Neil!

We loved playing in the first snow of the year during out time, we made snow forts, snow people and
and even a 'Snow Museum'! We also got faster and faster at getting all of our gear on throughout the week!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Best,
MY and Amanda
